Winter Fun in the Defereggental
Winter in East Tyrol
Exciting ski runs on the best prepared slopes in the ski area, leisurely cross-country skiing in the valley in the magnificent sunshine, adventurous ski tours in the wonderful mountain scenery of the Defereggental, or peaceful snowshoe hikes with beautiful views - this and much more are part of winter in East Tyrol. Here, you will find a selection of activities that you can try out on your dream vacation.
Skiing
St. Jakob in Defereggen ski area
The St. Jakob in Defereggen ski area, ca. 7 km away (10 min.), is an insider's tip - very straightforward and manageable, family-friendly, and accessible to everyone. Away from crowds of tourist, you can enjoy perfectly prepared ski slopes here. Thanks to the high altitude (ca. 1,400 m), our ski area is guaranteed to have snow, and our ski huts exude East Tyrolean charm. In addition, there is an opportunity to use other ski areas (Matrei-Kals, Sillian, Mölltal Glacier, and Ankogel) with the same ski pass without an extra charge!
Snowshoeing
Out and about in nature
Enjoy snowshoeing in unspoiled nature with gorgeous landscapes, and with a little luck, you can even observe wild animals! If you have ever been to the Defereggental, then you are familiar with the special, original, and authentic character of this valley. Wildlife observation tours with a national park ranger and full moon tours are very popular. Snowshoeing is the perfect opportunity to find inner peace. Snowshoes and poles can be rented for free by our guests!
Cross-country skiing
East Tyrol - a cross-country skiing paradise
The Defereggental has an excellent network of cross-country skiing trails on which you can enjoy the impressive nature with the magnificent, clean winter air. With perfectly prepared trails, you will find everything you could possibly want. Especially popular are the "Schwarzachloipe" trail and the high-altitude trail on the Staller Saddle!
Ice climbing
East Tyrol ice climbing park
Austria's largest artificial ice climbing park will make the pulse of every athlete race faster with excitement. Along with numerous icefalls, which can be found throughout East Tyrol in high-altitude, shady parts of the valleys, the East Tyrol ice climbing park offers the best conditions for every climbing enthusiast (ca. 20 min. walk from the Matreier Tauernhaus). After preparation, the artificial icefalls, created by a fine mist from pipes, form a frozen wall with around 50 routes in a compact space. It is the reliability of the ice in the park that makes it clearly stand out among other similar projects.
Ski tours
Into the mountains
The Defereggental is truly a ski touring paradise, which is why it is very often referred to as a ski touring Eldorado. Here, you can leave your tracks behind in pristine nature with a small group. The Langschneid tour is very popular as are tours on the Staller Saddle such as the Innerrodelgungge or Rote Wand. Our local mountain, the Speikboden, is also a favorite in spring. Upon request, we will be happy to organize your own ski touring guide.
Tobogganing fun in the Defereggental
Out and about with a toboggan
For tobogganing fans, we also have plenty to offer in the Defereggental! The Oberholz toboggan run in St. Veit – almost right outside our door (1 km away) - is excellently suited for families. As a special service, we even offer a free shuttle service from our inn straight to the toboggan run. The Alpe Stalle and Leppetal toboggan runs are also very popular with all guests.
